Cardiac Screening

On the 9th March 2013, as close as possible to Gideon's birthday which is the 3rd., a CRY screening event was held at  Leigh Primary Care Centre. On the day, 98 young people between the ages of 14 and 35 were given an ECG (electrocardiogram.) In some cases this was followed up with an echo cardiogram. All cases were seen and reviewed by a doctor trained in this speciality and several were referred back to their GP for further treatment or investigation. Some were advised that a condition was noted and should be monitored.

Funding to pay for the event was provided by the Gideon Baws Memorial Fund established at CRY. Money came from profits of  "Fishing With Harry" (royalties and private sales) and especially by Gideon's good friend Kenny who ran both the Royal Parks half marathon and the full Berlin Marathon. Several kind people also made donations. Thank you to the CRY team and everyone for their support.

The amount of money left in the fund after the cost of this event is almost enough to hold another, so we have booked Saturday 14th March 2014 at the same venue. Details will be announced in due course. All booking is through the CRY website.

Technology

With a little help from  my good friend Jo - see  http://lollipoplocal.co.uk/   - we aim to bring this site into the forefront of modern technology. For Harry's unprintable comments, please go to the 'Fishing With Harry' page at the top!

Thank you thank you thank you

I had a great time talking to Keith Arthur on TalkSPORT. The early start confused Lola as much as me - (she'll probably bark on a bit about it on her own site  http://www.lolybaws.blogspot.com/ ). I think I managed to make sense and not drift back to sleep.

I was delighted to see that the following day,  'Fishing With Harry' made it to NUMBER ONE on the Amazon list of Fishing books,  and in the top two hundred books overall, so  a huge thanks to everyone who bought it.

After the broadcast, Keith kindly sent me a copy of his own book 'Fishing - the best idea for loafing in the countryside' which I heartily reccommend. He's such a nice man, and an Arsenal supporter too (come on you Gooners!)

Suzie and I  are working towards a CRY cardiac screening in March 2013, to co-incide as near as possible with Gideon's birthday on 3rd March. That date is fast approaching -  this Saturday we shall visit him, with white flowers and broken hearts.

Fun in the early morn

This coming Saturday, 14th January,  at 7.15 am  I'll be doing a 'phone interview with Keith Arthur, the King of Fishermen,  for his programme "Fisherman's Blues" broadcast on  talkSPORT,  to promote FWH.

You can tune in on AM bands 1053 and 1089 and DAB, and  via the  TV on Sky  Channel 0108, Virgin on 927, Freeview 723 or Talk Talk 625. There's also streaming online at http://www.talksport.co.uk/ plus an  iPhone app.

Keith is a lovely man with an easy, interesting style and more credits to his name than I can mention. His programme is fun for all, even you poor non-fisherpersons. Try and make it, or record it, even!

Gideon Baws 3 March 1975 to 11 October 2008

A wonderful son to me and Suzie, an adored brother to Sam and Lucy, a splendid and talented man, a much missed friend and/or a lover to others (you know who you are!) Let's raise a glass, shout and stomp and scream, and remember Gideon and what we are missing because he's not here. Love you so much. Dadx
